Arabic Letter Noon Final Form

118/140

To type Arabic Noon at a word’s end, enter regular ن and let text shaping produce the final form; don’t enter ﻦ for new text. ﻦ is a legacy compatibility character for that word-final shape, not a separate letter or a conversational symbol. Nūn has a long history in Arabic writing and Islamic tradition, but those meanings belong to the letter, not this stored form.

Text symbol

What ﻦ means

No—type regular ن; let text shaping make the final form.

ﻦ is the word-final display form of Arabic Noon, whose ordinary base character is ن. Arabic letters that connect change shape with their position in a word; the font selects the appropriate glyph when the text is displayed. The separate presentation-form character was retained for compatibility with older encodings, not to create a new sound or spelling.

Arabic writing developed through Nabataean Aramaic script. An early Arabic inscription at ʿEn ʿAvdat is dated 88/9–125/6 CE and no later than 150 CE. As Arabic writing developed, connected letters took different forms by position; ﻦ is a later compatibility encoding of one such form.

Does final Noon have a special religious meaning?

Not by itself; those readings belong to the letter Nūn.

In the Qur’an, Sūrat al-Qalam is also called Sūrat Nūn because it opens with that letter alongside a pen. Later Islamic writers on the symbolic interpretation of letters read Noon’s bowl and dot as images of a whale, the cosmos, or the boundary between visible and hidden worlds. These are interpretations of Nūn, not meanings carried by the final-form character ﻦ.

Technical and script-specific: alone, ﻦ is a character-formatting lookup, not a social cue.

Don’t use ﻦ in new Arabic words to set the word-final shape.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ﻦ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
