What ظ means
On Arabic 101, press / with that layout active. Other Arabic layouts may put zah on a different key, so check the active layout’s key map.
The letter is also written ẓāʾ in Latin letters. Inside words, ظ joins neighboring letters when they allow a connection; its outline changes with those connections, but it remains the same letter.
Where did ظ come from?
It developed as part of Arabic script.
Arabic writing evolved from Nabataean Aramaic, an earlier writing tradition. The Namāra tomb inscription from 328 CE illustrates that transition; it does not date the exact dotted form ظ.
Dots distinguish letters with matching basic shapes. This system, called iʿjām, was systematized in the early Islamic period to reduce reading errors. The dot on ظ distinguishes it from ط and is part of the letter.
Why can ظ sound like ض?
Some dialects bring their sounds together; standard spelling keeps them separate.
In Egyptian Arabic and some other dialects, ظ can sound closer to a heavy “d” in everyday words, while more formal vocabulary may preserve a different pronunciation. In careful formal Arabic, it is a voiced, emphatic sound roughly like the “th” in English “this.” Do not change ظ to ض just because they sound alike in a dialect.

Questions people ask
1Why does ظ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
