What ﺷ means

It is the Arabic letter ش in its opening shape. Sheen is pronounced like “sh” in English. Its three dots distinguish it from س (seen), which represents /s/. Arabic letters change shape as they connect: the initial shape joins to the following letter, while isolated, middle, and final shapes depend on position. ﺷ is one fixed shape of the same letter, not a separate sound.

Arabic writing developed from Nabataean Aramaic traditions. The earliest dated inscriptions showing a full set of Arabic letter shapes appear in the late fifth century CE; early texts vary in letter shapes and spelling. The script records consonants in an abjad, a writing system that usually leaves short vowels unwritten. As Arabic script spread to Persian and other languages, its use adapted. In early Persian manuscripts, omitted dots could make sheen hard to tell from seen. Hebrew ש and Syriac ܫ are related members of the wider Semitic shin family; Nabataean is a closer predecessor of Arabic script.

Should I type the Arabic initial form?

Use ش in ordinary Arabic text. This fixed initial form exists for compatibility with older character sets and software. Unicode recommends ordinary Arabic letters for text interchange. A shaping system reads the surrounding letters and selects an opening shape when the joining context calls for it.

Use ﺷ only when preserving or testing text that already contains this exact form. Fonts can draw the same character differently; its appearance does not give it a different meaning.

A technical positional form; in ordinary Arabic writing, ش is the letter and ﺷ is one fixed shape of it.

For new Arabic text, use ش; ﺷ is a fixed compatibility form.
