30/62

ߝ is an N’Ko consonant pronounced like the f at the start of “fun.” It appears inside N’Ko words, where a cursive font may join it to neighboring letters and change its outline.

What ߝ means

It is called fa; it marks the f sound in a word. N’Ko letter names add the vowel a after a consonant sound. Fa is the letter’s spoken name; the character contributes f within a word.

N’Ko was created by Solomana Kanté as a writing system for Mande languages. Its first appearance is conventionally dated to Bingerville, Côte d’Ivoire, on 14 April 1949; that date marks a milestone in a longer design process.

Across West Africa, N’Ko later grew into a literary form and a grassroots literacy movement that met practical needs and expressed pride in Mande cultural heritage. It serves several Mande languages, including Bamanan, Maninka, Jula, and Mandinka, and can bridge dialect differences. Kanté’s knowledge of Arabic influenced N’Ko’s right-to-left direction and joining style; N’Ko has its own alphabet for Mande languages.

Why does N’Ko fa change shape?

Its form follows neighboring letters and the font. N’Ko is usually cursive: letters connect, and ߝ can take different forms depending on its neighbors. Some display fonts keep the letters separate. Both shapes represent the same character.

N’Ko runs right to left, while Latin text runs left to right. In a mixed passage, the N’Ko text run needs a right-to-left direction setting; without it, words can appear in the wrong visual order. This changes layout, not the letter’s identity.

A short-rising N’Ko mark, ߭, follows fa to form ߝ߭, used for the v sound in foreign and loan words. Bare ߝ represents f.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ߝ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
