What ߛ means
It represents the s sound in N’Ko. The letter name is sa, and ߛ supplies that consonant inside a word. An N’Ko teaching chart uses a word glossed as “death” as an example; the gloss belongs to the whole word, not the letter.
N’Ko was unveiled in Bingerville on April 14, 1949, after five years of experimentation. It was designed for writing Manding languages for mother-tongue education, with vowels and tones represented in the writing.
Ajami is an older West African practice of writing African languages in Arabic script; N’Ko developed within that literacy tradition. It also became a shared written register and literacy movement across Manding-speaking communities. Speakers of related Manding varieties can pronounce the same written word differently.
Why does ߛ change shape in a word?
Its outline can change to join neighboring letters. N’Ko is a joining script, so a letter’s form can depend on the characters beside it. The isolated sample is not its only shape.
N’Ko runs right to left. In a line that mixes N’Ko and Latin text, the app needs the base direction set to right-to-left; without that, the order can come out wrong. If the text seems backwards, check its direction and N’Ko shaping support.
ߛ alone is a neutral letter; any wider cultural signal comes from the surrounding N’Ko writing.

3Questions people ask
3Can ߛ take different forms in a word?
It can. N’Ko letters join, so the outline can change where a letter connects to its neighbors.
Why is ߛ a blank square?
Your current font may lack N’Ko support. Try a font that includes N’Ko characters.
Does ߛ mean “death”?
No. A teaching chart gives “death” as the gloss of a whole N’Ko example word; that gloss is not the individual letter’s meaning.
