What ϥ means
In Sahidic Coptic, ϥ writes the f sound. In early Old Coptic—early efforts to write Egyptian with Greek letters—fei appears among signs retained in standard Coptic.
The main alphabet came from Greek. Extra letters drawn from Demotic, an older Egyptian script, represented Egyptian sounds Greek did not express cleanly.
Coptic dialects could vary in letter and sound choices. The language later became chiefly liturgical, maintained in worship by Coptic Christians.
