arabic letter feh initial form

Arabic Letter Feh, Initial Form

99/140

ﻓ is the Arabic feh initial form: the joining shape of ف when it begins a connected word. It has the same reading as feh; for an ordinary Arabic word, type ف and let shaping choose the form. This pre-shaped character is for compatibility and rendering workflows, so it is usually the wrong input for everyday prose.

What ﻓ means

Type ف and let Arabic shaping choose the shape. In ordinary Arabic text, enter the base letter ف. The shaping engine selects its initial, medial, final or isolated appearance from the surrounding letters. Use ﻓ only when a legacy text, conversion, compatibility task or shaping test specifically requires this pre-shaped character.

Hard-coding the starting shape ties it to the character instead of letting it change with its neighbors. It may look right in a sample and still be the wrong input for an ordinary word.

Where did the Arabic feh starting shape come from?

It developed as part of connected Arabic writing. Arabic script grew gradually from Nabataean Aramaic. Transitional Nabataeo-Arabic phases are described between the third and fifth centuries CE; the earliest dated inscriptions with a full Arabic letter repertoire appear in the late fifth century CE. These dates concern the script’s development, not the first appearance of this exact encoded form.

The initial shape lets feh join a following letter at the beginning of a word. In Arabic and Persian, the underlying ف remains a letter, not a standalone message symbol. The Unicode presentation character records one position-specific shape for compatibility; it corresponds to ف and sits alongside feh’s isolated, final and medial forms.

Technical rather than expressive: this form belongs in shaping tests, compatibility data or font work, not as a decorative substitute in ordinary Arabic text.

For an ordinary Arabic word, use ف; a fixed initial form can disrupt contextual shaping.

1

Why does ﻓ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
