It is based on ق, the Arabic letter qaf. “Initial” names qaf’s shape at the start of a connected word.
For centuries, Arabic- and Persian-script math has used letter styles with distinct meanings. Regional conventions differ in function signs and number formats. A manuscript found on Jerba, Tunisia, copies a work composed in 1380; completed in Istanbul in 1747, it preserves Maghrebi (North African) algebra symbols in the margins.
