Hebrew Letter He

60/88

ה is the Hebrew letter he, also spelled hei or heh: it can represent an h sound or help mark a word's grammar. You meet it in ordinary Hebrew writing, including prefixes meaning “the.” At a word's end it may be silent; a dot inside can change the reading.

What ה means

Its job depends on its place in the word.

The “Hebrew h” is not always a sound to pronounce. In Biblical Hebrew—the language of the Hebrew Bible—ה attached before a noun can mean “the,” and an initial ה can introduce a question. Added at the end, it can mark movement toward a place.

Final ה may be silent or indicate a vowel. An inner dot called mappiq, as in הּ, marks it as a consonant to pronounce. Ordinary Hebrew usually leaves out vowel marks; texts for worship or pronunciation guidance may include them.

Where did ה come from?

It evolved from early alphabetic signs; its square form came later.

Its ancestry reaches into early alphabetic writing of the eastern Mediterranean in the second millennium BCE. A proposed ancestor in Proto-Sinaitic, an early alphabetic script, depicts a person with raised arms. Later Canaanite and Phoenician forms became more abstract.

Early inscriptions include names and blessings. Naming a sign with a word beginning in its sound helped writers remember it. The square Hebrew writing used today developed through Aramaic, another language and writing tradition of the region.

Its uses changed with Hebrew

The directional ending declined after Classical Biblical Hebrew, then revived in Early Modern Hebrew. A 2021 historical survey describes its contemporary use as limited.

In Jewish print as of 2026, ה׳ can abbreviate the divine name—the name of God. This religious convention is a later use, not the letter's ancient origin.

A standalone ה needs a Hebrew-language context; do not assume it is an emotional reaction.

Do not automatically pronounce final ה as h; the inner dot in הּ matters.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ה show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
