One reconstruction places the recognisable Mandaic script in the late Parthian period, especially the second century CE, as it developed from cursive Aramaic alongside Parthian chancery writing. The oldest dateable Mandaean texts include incantations on bowls and lead tablets from the third or fourth centuries CE. The script wrote Eastern Aramaic for Mandaean liturgy and preserved religious literature.

Classical Mandaic religious literature and Neo-Mandaic community language use share the script. In Mandaean tradition, writing has sacred weight: the alphabet may open manuscripts containing magical material.
