What מ means
It represents the m sound in Hebrew. Attached to a word’s beginning, מ־ can mean “from”; at the end of a word, it changes to ם, called final mem, without changing its sound.
Its older alphabet family leads to M
Early ancestors of mem appear in Proto-Sinaitic inscriptions dated to the 19th–16th centuries BCE. A water-like zigzag became a sign for a consonant; the letter developed over time, and Hebrew’s later square forms took shape through Aramaic writing. Phoenician mem led to Greek mu and then Latin M, through a related alphabetic line rather than the modern Hebrew shape.
