What 𞲤 means
It puts two before a larger number sign.
It builds compounds, not stand-alone numbers. With ten, it makes twelve; the regular Indic Siyaq two stands alone.
How did siyaq become account shorthand?
It served financial record-keeping.
The earliest surviving evidence for wider siyaq is Baghdad revenue accounts from 918–919. Persian government clerks shortened Arabic number names into stylized marks that could hide figures from outsiders.
Indic Siyaq was used under the Mughals by the 17th century and persisted into the middle of the 20th century. In Urdu and Persian accounts, Arabic script carried values such as lakh (100,000) and crore (10 million); raqm means “account” in Arabic.
