What ꬲ means
ꬲ is a blackletter-style e used to transcribe regional speech sounds.
Teuthonista and Böhmer–Ascoli are systems for transcribing local speech. They use Latin base letters and diacritics—small marks such as accents—to refine sound readings; the system's key tells you the exact sound. Böhmer–Ascoli was used in Italian and Swiss dialectology, while Teuthonista became its German-dialect counterpart; related language atlases borrowed from both traditions.
These notation traditions developed over time: Lepsius published an alphabet in 1855, Ascoli's work followed in 1873, Lenz's system appeared in 1900, and the Teuthonista journal presented a standard from 1924 onward.
How do I type ꬲ?
Use a character picker or a Unicode input escape.
Search for AB32 or “blackletter e” in an editor's character picker. UTF-8 HTML accepts ꬲ; source code in languages with Unicode escapes can use \uAB32.
If the character appears as a box, the chosen font lacks a glyph for it. Switching fonts can change its display without changing the stored character.
Specialist: it belongs to dialect and phonetic transcription, not casual styling.
The shape alone does not name a sound; check the source's transcription key.

1Why does ꬲ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
