What ɗ means
In the IPA, ɗ marks a voiced dental/alveolar implosive.
The tongue closes at the teeth or gum ridge as the larynx lowers and the vocal folds vibrate, pulling air inward. Hausa uses it beside ordinary d.
Why did Hausa choose hooked letters?
Hausa's hooked spelling was approved in 1938.
Earlier Hausa spellings marked b, d and k sounds with dots below, then above around 1912. A 1938 notice approved hooked ɓ, ɗ and ƙ.
