What ı means
ı is a vowel letter, not an i missing its dot.
In Turkish, ı and dotted i represent different vowels. Replacing ı with i can change a word or name; Azerbaijani also uses this letter.
Why are there two i letters in Turkish?
They represent two different vowels.
In 1928, Turkey adopted the modern Latin-based Turkish alphabet, replacing the Arabic-script alphabet used for Ottoman Turkish, the historical language of the Ottoman Empire. It spells the two Turkish vowels with separate letters: ı and i.
Why does ı turn into i?
A case-conversion round trip can apply mismatched language rules.
In Turkish, ı becomes capital I and i becomes İ. General English-style lowercasing turns I back into i, so an upper-then-lowercase conversion can change ı. Set the text's language to Turkish before changing case.
In Turkish and Azerbaijani it is an ordinary letter; in English text it can look like an i with a missing dot.
Do not replace ı with i in Turkish spelling; they represent different vowels.
