Modifier Letter Capital I

54/128

To enter ᴵ, use Unicode input or the Finnish UPA Windows shortcut AltGr + Shift + I. In the Uralic Phonetic Alphabet (UPA), this raised I marks a very brief I-like segment. A formatted I may look similar, but it is not the encoded phonetic character.

What ᴵ means

Use Unicode input or the Finnish UPA Windows shortcut.

On the Finnish UPA Windows layout, press AltGr + Shift + I. In editors with Unicode input, enter U+1D35.

What does ᴵ mean in phonetic writing?

In UPA, it marks a very brief I-like segment.

The Uralic Phonetic Alphabet (UPA), also called Finno-Ugric Transcription (FUT), was first published by Finnish linguist E. N. Setälä in 1901 as a proposal for transcribing Finno-Ugric languages. It records pronunciation, sound patterns, and word histories, so the raised form has a phonetic job.

UPA scholarship has spanned Finland, Hungary, Estonia, Germany, Norway, Sweden, and Russia, and later reached North America and Japan. In 2022, a guide to the Uralic languages used the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), a shared notation for speech sounds, for languages without a Latin-based standard, while retaining traditional FUT for reconstructed forms: earlier forms inferred from language comparisons.

Is ᴵ a normal superscript I?

No; ᴵ is a phonetic character, not a styling shortcut.

Unicode treats modifier letters as spacing letters in their own right. Formatting an ordinary I as superscript changes its appearance, but does not create ᴵ or preserve its UPA notation. Use formatting when you only want a raised I; use ᴵ when a transcription calls for this encoded character.

Specialist phonetic notation; in ordinary text, ᴵ reads as a technical choice rather than conversational emphasis.

For visual emphasis, format I instead; ᴵ can look like unexplained phonetic notation.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ᴵ show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Phonetic Extensions block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.

Why is ᴵ a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
