modifier letter capital j

Modifier Letter Capital J

55/128

ᴶ marks a very short or transitional sound written with J in phonetic transcription, especially in the Uralic Phonetic Alphabet (UPA). Read it with the surrounding notation: its raised position marks its role but does not settle the exact sound by itself. It appears in specialist descriptions of languages.

What ᴶ means

It marks a very short or transitional J element in UPA-style transcription.

The Uralic Phonetic Alphabet (UPA) is a system for writing the sounds of Uralic languages such as Finnish, Sámi, and Hungarian. In UPA, the raised position can mark sounds shorter than ordinary segments or brief transitions between sounds; the notation around ᴶ determines how to read it.

It does not prescribe one exact sound on its own. The similar modifier ʲ belongs to the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and marks palatalization: pronouncing another consonant with the tongue raised toward the roof of the mouth.

Why did Uralic transcription use raised letters?

The notation helped researchers compare Uralic languages consistently.

Rasmus Rask's grammar of Sámi, a group of languages spoken in northern Europe, is identified as an early foundation in 1832. Helsinki researchers discussed a shared transcription system in 1892; E. N. Setälä published a Finno-Ugric proposal in 1901.

Setälä's 1890–91 design used unraised small-capital ᴊ for a semivowel, a brief glide between vowel-like sounds. UPA's raised letters served a different role: they mark very short or transitional sounds. The notation also appears beyond Uralic linguistics, including in work on Indo-European, Turkic, and Altaic languages and in archaeological descriptions.

Specialist phonetic notation; its presence points to technical transcription.

Drift: As of 2022, some Uralic scholarship uses IPA-based transcription for particular languages, while older grammars and dictionaries remain in UPA; the systems coexist rather than forming a clean replacement.
