What ɣ means
It marks a voiced fricative made near the soft palate. Keep your vocal cords vibrating while narrowing the passage at the back of your mouth; the resulting friction makes it a consonant. “Velar” means the tongue works near the soft palate.
In IPA transcription, ɣ labels the sound. In some Latin-script spellings, it is a letter instead, including in Dagbani and Ewe.
The IPA association began in 1886 to improve language teaching through phonetics. Its 1932 chart replaced an older mark for this sound with the gamma-shaped ɣ.
How do I type ɣ?
Use hexadecimal Unicode input when your keyboard lacks it. As of 2026-10-08, in GTK apps on Linux, press CtrlShiftu, release, type 263, then press Space or Enter.
As of 2026-10-08, Microsoft Word converts 0263 with AltX. On macOS, enable Unicode Hex Input, hold Option, and type 0263; a system character map is a fallback.
Technical: it signals phonetics or belongs to a language's Latin-script spelling.
The tail matters: ɣ marks a consonant; ɤ marks a vowel.

1Why does ɣ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
