Algeria emoji meanings: 🇩🇿 ☪️ 🦊 ⵣ

the Algerian flag is the emoji Algerians use most: for pride, a match, the 5th of July, or simply where you are from. Its halves of green and white with a red crescent and star also work as hearts, , and as , the star and crescent. Green is commonly read as Islam and the land, white as peace and red as the blood of those who died for independence; Algerians often call their country the land of a million and a half martyrs.

ⵣ is not an emoji but a letter: yaz, the Tifinagh letter Z, which stands for the Amazigh (Berber) people and sits in red in the middle of the blue, green and yellow Amazigh flag. In Kabylie, the Aurès and among Amazigh Algerians everywhere it is the identity sign, pasted into names, bios and posts. The Amazigh flag has no emoji, so ⵣ is what people copy instead. Tamazight became a national language of Algeria in 2002 and an official one, beside Arabic, in 2016.

DZ comes from Dzayer, the way Algerians say the name of their country (in Standard Arabic al-Jazāʾir, after the islets off the harbour of Algiers). That is why you see "DZ" in so much Algerian slang, team names and usernames, and why "dz emoji" is a search of its own. The flag itself was adopted at independence in 1962. For Algeria's neighbours see our Morocco and Tunisia collections, and all the others in Flag Emoji.

The Algerian dinar (DZD) has no currency sign of its own in Unicode. Prices are written DA, from dinar algérien, as in 500 DA, or in Arabic دج, the letters dal and jim, so are the emoji people use for money talk.

Algeria's official languages are Arabic and Tamazight. Daily life is mostly in Algerian Arabic, Darja, which CLDR estimates is spoken by about 39 million of Algeria's roughly 47 million people; Kabyle, the largest Tamazight language, by about 3.7 million by the same estimate; and French, still common in business, media and on shop signs, by about 15.5 million. Arabic has 28 letters written right to left (ا ب ت ث … ي) plus hamza ء and its seats أ إ ؤ ئ, alif madda آ, and final letters ة ى. Like the rest of the Maghreb, Algeria writes its numbers with the digits 0–9, not the ٠١٢٣ used further east. Online, Darja is often typed in Latin letters with digits for sounds Latin lacks: 3 for ع, 7 for ح, 9 for ق, as in sa7a or 3lach.

Kabyle is written in the Latin alphabet with ten extra letters: č ḍ ɛ ǧ ɣ ḥ ṛ ṣ ṭ ẓ; ɛ is the sound of Arabic ع and ɣ that of غ, while the dots under ḍ ṛ ṣ ṭ ẓ mark emphatic consonants. Tifinagh, the Tamazight script of ⵣ, appears on signs and logos. To type them on Windows, add the Arabic keyboard in Settings (Time & language), or in Word type a code and press Alt + X: 025B gives ɛ, 0263 ɣ, 2D63 ⵣ. In HTML, ⵣ is ⵣ. On a phone, add an Arabic keyboard, or a Kabyle or Tamazight one if your keyboard app offers it; or copy the letters from this page. For full alphabets see our Arabic, Algerian Arabic, Kabyle and French collections.
