What ๐ช means
Money in any currency, shown as a single coin. The banknote emoji , , and each carry one currency sign, and suggests a big pile of it. ๐ช is the neutral, everyday one: a split bill, bus fare, a tip, pocket money or "saving up for it", whatever you pay with.
The gold-coin look gives it a second life in games. Coins are the classic reward you collect in platformers such as Super Mario, arcade machines once said "insert coin", and many online games have their own coin or token currency, so gamers use ๐ช for all of that. In finance and tech chats the same gold disc stands for cryptocurrency, where a unit is literally called a coin or token; ๐ช is a quick way to say a coin is rising. It is not a dedicated crypto symbol, though: without that context it just means money.
Taken literally, it is a physical coin and the things people do with one: tossing it to settle a fifty-fifty decision, dropping it in a fountain for luck, feeding a parking meter, or collecting old ones (numismatics, the hobby of coin collecting).
What does it mean when someone sends you ๐ช?
Money is involved; the words around it say how. Next to a number it marks a cost or a payment ("dinner was 20 ๐ช each"). After "you owe me" it is a light reminder to pay up. A lone "๐ช?" after a plan asks what it costs or whether it has been paid. With "heads or tails" or a dilemma it means "let's flip for it". In a gaming group it is in-game coins or rewards; in a trading chat it is a crypto coin or token.
Its tone is neutral and slightly playful, and it has no widely known slang or hidden meaning, so take it at face value. If a payment really is overdue, it is the gentlest way to raise it; add words if you want to be sure the hint lands.
Neutral and light: practical money talk with a hint of treasure-chest fun. Fine with friends, family and colleagues.
In a crypto thread a bare ๐ช next to a coin name can look like you are promoting it; say what you mean.

8Worth knowing
- Before ๐ช arrived, the only money emoji were four banknotes, for the dollar, euro, yen and pound, plus a money bag marked with a dollar sign. The coin was proposed as a money symbol that favours no country.
- "Heads" is called that because coins traditionally show a ruler's head on the front, the obverse; the back is the reverse, so "tails" is simply whatever is on the other side.
Questions people ask
4Does ๐ช mean cryptocurrency?
It can, when the chat is already about crypto, trading or a named token. On its own it reads simply as money or a coin.
What country's currency is the ๐ช coin?
None. It was designed as a generic coin so that people who don't use dollars, euros, yen or pounds have a money emoji that doesn't show a foreign banknote.
What is the difference between ๐ช and ?
Scale and mood. ๐ช is one coin: a fee, a tip, pocket change. is a bulging bag: a big win, a fortune or "show me the money". Both work for money in general.
Does ๐ช mean someone wants money from me?
Only if the words say so. "You owe me ๐ช" is a reminder; a coin next to a price is just a price tag. Without such words it is not a demand.
