๐Ÿงง

red envelope

๐Ÿงง is a red envelope with a gift of cash inside, the hongbao of Chinese tradition, also called a red packet, lai see or ang pow. Elders give them to children at Lunar New Year, and guests give them at weddings. In a message it means โ€œwishing you luck and prosperityโ€ or hints at a cash gift. No money travels with the emoji.

What ๐Ÿงง means

It is cash dressed up as a blessing, and the colour does the blessing. In Chinese culture red is the colour of luck and of keeping bad fortune away, so money handed over in a red envelope stops being a bank note and becomes a wish for a good year. The amount is often modest; the gesture is the point. In Mandarin the envelope is a hongbao (็บขๅŒ…, โ€œred packetโ€), in Cantonese a lai see, and among Hokkien speakers in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia an ang pow or angpau. Vietnamese families give lรฌ xรฌ at Tแบฟt.

The classic moment is Lunar New Year. Older relatives give envelopes to children and young unmarried family members, and in Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia the rule of thumb is that married adults give and unmarried ones receive, whatever their age. The New Year money has its own name, yasuiqian (ๅŽ‹ๅฒ้’ฑ), traditionally said to โ€œpress downโ€ the evil of the passing year. Red envelopes also go to the couple at weddings, where guests give cash this way instead of a boxed present, and to new babies, graduates and sometimes staff from a boss after the holiday.

There is etiquette. Notes should be new and crisp, the amount should be an even number, and sums with a 4 are avoided because โ€œfourโ€ sounds like โ€œdeathโ€ in Chinese, while an 8 (โ€œprosperโ€) is welcome. You receive with both hands, say thank you, and donโ€™t open it in front of the giver. Korean New Year money and Japanese otoshidama are cousins of the custom, but they come in white or decorated envelopes, so the bright red one is specifically Chinese.

What does it mean when someone sends ๐Ÿงง?

Usually a festive wish for luck and wealth, sometimes a real gift behind it. Beside a New Year greeting it is the emoji version of ๆญๅ–œๅ‘่ดข, โ€œwishing you prosperityโ€, and it fits weddings, births and good news in the same spirit. When the message is about a present, it stands for the cash gift itself: โ€œsent you a little something ๐Ÿงงโ€.

It is also a joke. Children recite ๆญๅ–œๅ‘่ดข๏ผŒ็บขๅŒ…ๆ‹ฟๆฅ (โ€œhappy New Year, now hand over the red packetโ€), and adults use ๐Ÿงง the same way to beg a round, a tip or a bonus from a friend. Digital red packets, small sums sent inside chat and payment apps and hugely popular in China since the mid-2010s, keep the custom alive on phones, and the emoji often announces or thanks for one. The emoji itself is only a picture: no transfer happens, and a ๐Ÿงง is not proof that money was sent.

Warm, generous and festive; between friends it turns cheeky. Fine from strangers in a holiday greeting, odd in a serious money conversation.

Sent to someone who owes you money, it reads as a nudge to pay up; and it never confirms a transfer.

Worth knowing

  • ๐Ÿงง arrived in 2018 together with firecracker and moon cake, a batch added so East Asian festivals could be written in emoji at all.
  • Chinese givers avoid sums containing a 4, which sounds like โ€œdeathโ€, and favour 8, which sounds like โ€œprosperโ€; 88 and 888 are especially popular amounts.

Questions people ask

4

How should I reply to ๐Ÿงง?

With thanks and a wish back: โ€œthank you, happy New Year to you too!โ€ If real money came with it, thank them for the gift. You owe nothing in return for the emoji alone.

Can I send ๐Ÿงง if Iโ€™m not Chinese?

Yes. It is a friendly New Year or wedding greeting, and recipients who keep the custom take it as the compliment it is. Add a word of greeting so it isnโ€™t read as asking for money.

Does the red envelope emoji send money?

No. It is a character, not a payment. Real red packets are sent through payment features in chat apps; the emoji only talks about them.

How much do people put in a red envelope?

It depends on closeness and place. Children get small sums, wedding guests give enough to cover their seat and more. Even amounts, and lucky 8s rather than 4s, matter more than the size.
