Nothing fixed — the words around it decide the meaning. Unlike emojis built to show a clear emotion, the floating man in a suit entered keyboards by accident from an old computer symbol font, where it stood for the word “jump”. Because nobody was handed a rulebook for it, people read the picture literally: a sharply dressed figure defying gravity without breaking a sweat.

In everyday messages, that visual turns into two main readings. Next to good news or an outfit photo, it means rising above the rest, feeling untouchable, or looking sharp. Used on its own or in a joke, it leans into the surreal image — a deadpan, slightly mysterious vibe, like an agent from a spy movie or someone ascending out of an awkward conversation. When a Bustle writer texted it to friends without explanation in 2015, their guesses ran from “mysterious” and “handsome” to simply “floating”.

What does it mean when someone sends you 🕴️?

Look at what sits beside it. Next to a promotion, a passed exam, a closed deal or a payday, the sender is flexing: they are coasting upward with zero visible effort. Next to plans for a night out or a photo in formal wear, it just means “suited up and ready”.

Sent completely alone, it is a shrug in a tailored suit. Friends drop it as a random, absurdist reaction, to act playfully secretive, or just to send a weird icon and see how you reply. It is never an insult; if there is no clue in the chat, ask what they meant.

Where did the floating man in a suit come from?

From a British ska record label and a photo of Peter Tosh. In 1979, musician Jerry Dammers founded 2 Tone Records in Coventry, England, the label that spearheaded the British ska revival (an energetic Jamaican music style with walking basslines and offbeat rhythms that preceded reggae). With designer John “Teflon” Sims, Dammers created the label's mascot, Walt Jabsco — a man in a black suit, white shirt, black tie, dark glasses, white socks and a flat-crowned pork-pie hat, traced from a 1965 photograph of Jamaican musician Peter Tosh with the Wailers.

In 1997, Microsoft type designer Vincent Connare was building the Webdings symbol font and owned a 2 Tone T-shirt; he drew a simplified version of Walt Jabsco to represent the word “jump”. When Unicode added Webdings icons in 2014 so documents would display properly across computers and phones, the jumping ska mascot became an emoji — and in 2021, Peter Tosh's children publicly welcomed the unexpected link to their father.
