What 👅 means
A lick, a taste, or a tease — context picks. Next to food it says yummy; after a jab it's a tongue-out taunt; in a flirty exchange it turns suggestive. Unlike 😛, it has no silly face attached, so there's less to cushion the spicier reading.
Where does the tongue-out taunt come from?
From Japan's akanbe, the “red eye” taunt. In akanbe you pull down a lower eyelid to show its red underside, often with your tongue out — mostly a kids' playground sneer. A 1909 Japanese novel, Tayama Katai's Inaka Kyōshi (“Country Teacher”), shows schoolboys doing it.
Emoji began on Japanese mobile phones. A 2009 mapping of carrier symbols for Unicode matched 👅 to phone pictograms labelled akanbee. The emoji kept only the tongue.
What does it mean when someone sends you just 👅?
Check the sender and the thread before assuming. From someone already flirting with you, take it as a hint. From a coworker or friend in the middle of a food or gross-out joke, it's yum or ew. If nothing frames it, ask instead of treating it as an invitation.
Playful in group chats; loaded in private one-on-one chats.
Sent alone to a crush or coworker, it can read as sexual.

Questions people ask
2Is the tongue emoji sexual?
It can be. A 2018 study in The Canadian Journal of Human Sexuality found 👅 among the three most common object emojis in sexually suggestive messages. Context still decides each send.
What does it mean when a guy sends the tongue emoji?
It depends on the chat. If you're already flirting, it's likely a hint; after a food photo or a joke, it's yum or teasing. Unsure? Ask.
