It's the :P face: I'm joking, don't take this straight. Tongue out, eyes wide open — no wink, no squint. It turns a tease, a brag or a fake-grossed-out 'bleh' into play. Put it right after the line you're softening and let it grin for you.

What does it mean when someone sends you 😛?

Usually they're softening something, not starting a fight. A lone 😛 sticks to whatever came before it — a cancelled plan, a mild diss, a shameless brag. Between friends who roast each other it reads affectionate; from a boss or stranger the same tongue can look mocking.

Readers differ, too: some still see a stuck-out tongue as a childish, cheeky gesture, while people used to typing :P treat it as ordinary joke-filler. Weigh the sender before you weigh the face.
