What ☺️ means
Warmth without the volume of a toothy grin. The relaxed emoji suits contentment, gratitude and affectionate reassurance: thanks, good news, a request asked nicely. From a friend, a coworker or a crush, take it at face value. After a barbed line like "good for you ☺️", though, the sweetness sharpens the jab.
Why is ☺️ black and white?
Its invisible style code was dropped or ignored. The face is followed by FE0F, a hidden variation selector that asks for colorful emoji presentation. Without it, or in apps that ignore it, you get the plain text face ☺. Same character, same meaning; nothing was censored.
Where did the classic smiley come from?
No single artist invented the simple smiley. On the IBM PC of 1981, ☺ was a screen figure for text-mode games, and old software could also read its slot as a control code. Separately, Harvey Ball drew a yellow smiley badge for an American insurer in 1963, and a French commercial version followed in 1972. These are cultural cousins, not proven ancestors of the PC glyph.

1Worth knowing
- The characters behind ☺️ existed in Unicode 8 years before anyone was allowed to draw them in colour: Unicode 3.2 in 2002, emoji presentation in 2010.
- ☺️ is not one character. It is 2 of them glued together, which is why deleting it sometimes takes two presses of backspace and why it breaks character counters.
