What 😉 means
It changes how you read the words, not how cheerful they sound. After a joke, exaggeration, or pointed complaint, the wink marks the line as not meant literally. After a compliment or invitation, it can open a door to flirting. It can also signal shared knowledge: “you know what I mean.” The sentence and your relationship decide which.
Someone sent me 😉 — is it flirting?
Maybe, but the rest of the message says more than the face. Delete the emoji in your head. If the sentence still works literally, the wink may only add a private joke or a soft tease. If the sentence only makes sense as a hint, the subtext is probably the point — but not necessarily romantic. A 2024 analysis of Danish and Spanish Tinder chats found no fixed wink reading: placement, the surrounding message, and the sender's habits changed the interpretation. A 2022 experiment found older adults read sarcasm less easily overall, yet the wink helped both younger and older readers catch it.
Is 😉 safe to send at work?
Only where joking familiarity is already welcome. On a request, correction, or complaint, a wink can soften the bossy edge, but it can also suggest flirting or an inside joke nobody agreed to. That extra layer is risky with a manager, a client, or someone new. If warmth matters, put it in words.
Playful, informal, and socially loaded; safest where shared joking familiarity already exists.
At work or with a new contact, a wink on a request can sound flirtatious or overfamiliar.

- 😉 grew out of Japanese mobile emoji: the phone carriers NTT DoCoMo, KDDI (au) and SoftBank each had their own wink picture, and the Unicode character added in 2010 was mapped to all three.
Questions people ask
3How old is winking as a signal?
Far older than emoji. English records the wink as a hint or signal by c. 1100; that dates the written evidence, not the gesture itself.
Why did Slack turn ;) into 😉?
Possibly automatic conversion. Slack can turn typed faces such as `;)` into emoji (as of 2026); untick “Convert typed emoticons to emoji” under Preferences › Messages & media › Emoji. So the picture may not be a new hint from the sender.
Can 😉 look different on different devices?
Yes. Emoji artwork varies by platform. Slack says it shows Apple style on Mac and iOS and Google style on Windows, Linux, and Android (as of 2026); small shape or color differences can shade the tone. The character itself is the same.
How to type 😉

A visible symbol can contain several code points. JS .length counts UTF-16 units; UTF-8 counts bytes.
