Face With Rolling Eyes

It is an eye roll in emoji form. It says disbelief, impatience or a sarcastic “seriously?” without spending a single word on the argument. The target sets the force: aimed at circumstances, it vents frustration; aimed at someone's claim, it rejects what they said.

The gesture is far older than emoji. A study of Latin texts from ancient Rome treats rolling the eyes as a recognizable gesture, and in Shakespeare the same motion could signal lust. Conversation research on British and American English describes it as protest at what someone just said or did, so its meaning has shifted with period and setting.

The digital face also predates its inclusion in the Unicode Standard: a 2014 compatibility proposal listed faces already used in Gmail and Windows Live Messenger, plus an Apple request under the gloss “Exasperation.” Unicode was catching up with an idea chat apps already had.

What does 🙄 mean when someone sends it?

Find the target before taking it personally. After the sender's own complaint, it points at the situation and you are the audience. After your claim, it points at your words. After a quote from someone else, it invites you to share the sender's disbelief.

A bare 🙄 in an argument is a protest, not an explanation. Answer the disputed point once, or ask what they meant if the target is unclear; sending one back just adds a second dismissal.
