Gen Z emoji meanings: dead, crying and melting
Skull is the Gen Z laugh. "I'm dead" has meant "that was so funny it killed me" since the early 2010s, and the skull is simply that phrase as a picture; under a video means it was very funny, not that anyone died. Skull and Crossbones, Coffin and Headstone are the same joke pushed further ("dead and buried"), and Face with Crossed-Out Eyes is the knocked-out version. The skull took over from Face with Tears of Joy, which was Oxford Dictionaries' Word of the Year in 2015 and became so universal that it stopped feeling funny to the people who had grown up with it.
Loudly Crying Face is the second big one, and it almost never means sadness on its own. It is laughing, it is "this is too much", it is "she's so pretty ". The same goes for Weary Face, which reads as "ugh" or as desire ("the way he looks ") far more often than as tiredness. Melting Face (Emoji 14.0, 2021) is the face for cringe, embarrassment, a heatwave or slowly dissolving under pressure; Face with Spiral Eyes and Exploding Head are overload, Shaking Face (2022) is "shook", and Face with Bags Under Eyes (Emoji 16.0, 2024) and Low Battery are the tired ones: "my social battery is at ".
Deadpan and side-eye: moai, salute, stone faces, cap and tea
Moai is the deadpan face of the internet. The emoji is based on the Moyai statue outside Shibuya Station in Tokyo, itself modelled on the Easter Island moai, and it came in with the first Japanese emoji set in Unicode 6.0 (2010). Gen Z uses it for a stone-faced stare: unimpressed, unbothered, "bruh". , the statue with a glass of wine, is the ironic "classy" version. Saluting Face (2021) is "yes sir", "noted", "o7", said with a straight face even when nobody gave an order.
Neutral Face, Expressionless Face, Face Without Mouth and Dotted Line Face (2021, the face that wants to disappear) are the deadpan replies. Face with Raised Eyebrow is "sus", the word that Among Us made universal in 2020; is "caught in 4K". Face with Monocle is inspecting something closely, Unamused Face and Face with Rolling Eyes are side-eye, Grimacing Face is "yikes", Face with Diagonal Mouth is ":/". Head Shaking Horizontally and Head Shaking Vertically (Emoji 15.1, 2023, on iPhones since iOS 17.4) are no and yes with the same unbothered smile, and Upside-Down Face is "everything is fine" while it clearly is not.
Billed Cap means a lie. "Cap" for a lie and "no cap" for "I'm serious" come from Black American slang, where capping has long meant bragging or exaggerating; the emoji (2017) is the visual shorthand, so "no " is "no lie" and a reply means "you're lying". Triangular Flag is a red flag, and the format for listing dating red flags swept Twitter in October 2021. Snake is a backstabber, Ghost is being ghosted, Clown Face is foolishness, your own included ("I really thought he'd text back "), Disguised Face is someone obviously pretending, and Nerd Face, often as , is the reply that says "erm, actually" to a know-it-all.
, an eye, a mouth and an eye, is the staring face that spread in March 2020 with the caption "it is what it is"; in June 2020 a group of young tech workers turned it into a mock app launch, .fm, that raised money for racial justice charities. Eyes on their own means "I see you" or "spill". Face with Open Eyes and Hand Over Mouth, Face with Peeking Eye and Face with Hand Over Mouth are the gossip faces, and the gossip itself is tea: Hot Beverage or Teacup, "spill the tea", with the Kermit "but that's none of my business" meme from 2014. is "shh, I'm mewing", the 2024 jaw-exercise joke; Brain is "big brain" or, lately, brain rot.
Slay, hype and the sincere corner
Nail Polish is slay: unbothered, done, "and what about it". Person Tipping Hand is the sassy hair flip, Woman Dancing is serving, Crown is "queen" or "king", Goat is the GOAT, the greatest of all time. Fire and Hundred Points are still the plain hype pair, and Speaking Head turns a reply into a shout: means "SPEAK ON IT". ‼️ and ⁉️ are the caption punctuation of TikTok, Face with Steam From Nose is pumped rather than angry, and , "on top", is said about yourself with a straight face. Pinched Fingers (2020) is the Italian gesture, used for "chef's kiss" or "what do you want from me", Index Pointing at the Viewer is "you", often as for pointing and laughing, is "chill", and is "peace out".
The sincere emoji matter just as much. Face Holding Back Tears (2021) is touched, proud, overwhelmed in a good way, or "I'm fine " when you are not. Smiling Face with Tear is the laugh-through-it face, Pleading Face is puppy eyes, "please", and next to it is the shy ask: "so um are you free". Flushed Face is caught off guard. Heart Hands (2021) is love and thanks without the weight of a red heart, Folded Hands is "please" or "thank you" as much as prayer, is the K-pop finger heart, People Hugging is the hug, and Pinching Hand is "a tiny bit".
The chair, the wilted rose and other emoji with a backstory
Chair means nothing, and that was the point. In August and September 2021 the TikToker Anthony Mai asked his followers to use the chair instead of a laughing emoji as an inside joke, and to flood the YouTuber KSI's comments with it; KSI joined in, big brand accounts followed, and for a few weeks a chair under a video meant "funny". Pregnant Man (2021) became a meme on arrival and now mostly means "I ate too much". Person Standing is "standing here awkwardly", Person Walking is leaving the conversation, is running from it, Person Kneeling is begging, is "idk" and is a facepalm.
Wilted Flower (2016) became the Gen Z and Gen Alpha broken heart in early 2025, after TikTok started using it instead of : dramatic, mock-serious heartbreak over small things, or under a bad grade or a cancelled plan. Linguists call this a forced emoji, a meaning assigned on purpose to an emoji older users have not claimed. The heart colours shift the same way: and feel cleaner than to many younger users, (2022) is the soft one, is obsession. Sparkles around a word, like this, adds sarcastic emphasis, and are the "fairy comments" of 2020 that start sweet and end with an insult. are the aesthetic set: butterflies, bubbles, the coquette bow, the evil-eye bead and the disco ball that say "it's giving" a mood rather than a meaning.
Then there are the emoji that mean one thing to Gen Z and another to everyone else. Smirking Face and Smiling Face with Horns are flirty, Biting Lip (2021) openly so, is hot, is "sheesh" or ice cold, New Moon Face is creepy-flirty and Full Moon Face is an awkward smile. are the body-part innuendo everyone knows by now. Woozy Face, Face in Clouds and Face Exhaling are zoned out, tipsy or, with , high.
Why Gen Z doesn't use the thumbs up emoji (or )
A 2021 Perspectus Global survey of 2,000 people aged 16 to 29 ranked Thumbs Up as the emoji most likely to make the sender look old, ahead of Red Heart, OK Hand, the check mark, and . The complaint is tone: a bare in reply to a message reads as dismissive or passive-aggressive to many younger people, and Slightly Smiling Face reads the same way, a polite smile with something behind it. and are not rude, they are just dated; the laugh moved to and .
None of this is a rulebook. Meanings move fast, differ between friend groups, and are often used ironically on purpose, which is the whole fun. If you are writing to someone from Gen Z, mirror what they send you; if you only need a safe reaction, for thanks, or for funny, for touched and for "got it" will not date you.
