Smiling Face with Horns

Being a little bad on purpose, and enjoying it. The grin outranks the horns: this imp face marks mischief, teasing, or a guilty pleasure. Caption your own move with it — “skipped leg day 😈” — and you're bragging, not confessing.

What does it mean when someone sends you 😈?

Usually a nudge to misbehave, sometimes a flirt. After a plan or a dare, it's approval: go on, do the slightly bad thing. In a suggestive chat, or stacked with 😏 or 🔥, it can sound seductive.

From a coworker or a new match, even a joking 😈 can land as a come-on. In a 2019 street interview, one person called it “seductive and naughty” while another used emoji just for banter — so read the relationship before the horns.

Why did 😈 once look angry?

Early Google artwork gave it a frown. Android 5.0 corrected the design to a smile, so old Android screenshots can make 😈 look much like the angry 👿.

Its name changed too. A 2009 Unicode draft — part of an effort to make emoji from Japanese phone carriers work across systems — listed it as “face with look of triumph” before it was standardized as “smiling face with horns”.
