What 😠 means

Annoyed and saying so, but not raging. 😠 sits in the middle of the anger range: sterner than a sulk, calmer than enraged face or , the face with a bar of censored swearing over its mouth. Furrowed brows and a flat frown make a scowl that says frustrated enough to name it, not screaming.

It started on Japanese phones. A 1997 emoji set from the carrier now called SoftBank already had an angry-face predecessor, and when NTT's mobile company (renamed NTT DoCoMo in 2000) launched emoji for its i-mode mobile internet in 1999, its designers used little faces like this to fit emotion onto tiny screens with short message limits. Unicode took it in with the Japanese carrier emoji in 2010.
