What 😡 means
Strong anger, from boiling frustration to full rage.
The red face is the whole point. Next to the yellow 😠 it reads hotter, the emoji version of going red in the face. It suits things that make your blood boil; for a mild grumble it overshoots.
It comes from Japanese mobile emoji. NTT DoCoMo, a Japanese mobile carrier, released an early emoji set for phones and pagers in 1999 so short messages could carry tone. The 2010 Unicode comparison of carrier sets found this face in the DoCoMo, KDDI and SoftBank catalogs, labelled “pouting”, “cute anger” or “anger”, which is softer than the English “enraged” it goes by today.
Does 😡 mean someone is mad at me?
Not necessarily; check what it's reacting to.
After your mistake or a refusal, the anger may well be aimed at you. After bad news or a story about someone else, it points outward, and sympathy works better than self-defence. A bare 😡 as the whole reply leaves the target open; if it matters, ask.
Position changes the heat too. A 2021 study of negative online reviews found that an angry emoji placed mid-sentence made the writer seem angrier than one at the end, at least with moderately worded complaints. It tested angry emoji in general, so treat it as a clue, not a law.
High heat. Fits real outrage or obviously theatrical fury; aimed at a person without words, it can land as an attack.
A bare 😡 can look aimed at the recipient even when you meant the situation.
