What 🔥 means
Usually strong approval: “this is fire.”
Under a song, outfit, performance or post, 🔥 says the thing is excellent or “lit”. Under someone’s photo it can praise their looks; in wildfire, cooking or heatwave messages it goes back to meaning actual fire.
Did they compliment me or flirt with me?
The target decides which reading wins.
On shared work or news, 🔥 is emphatic praise. Under a selfie, the “hot” sense can make it flirtatious, but one flame doesn’t prove romantic intent — read the words around it and who sent it. Stacking flames turns up the enthusiasm without making it sexual.
Where did the fire emoji come from?
From Japanese phone pictographs, standardised by Unicode in 2010.
Japanese phone carriers had tiny pictographs long before Unicode: the SoftBank/J-Phone SkyWalker phone carried the earliest known mobile emoji set in 1997, and in 1999 NTT DoCoMo’s i-mode team designed pictographs for short, low-resolution messages. A Unicode source table from 2009 lists the carriers’ versions of this fire symbol, which Unicode then standardised so different phones could exchange it.
The flame started out literal. Between 2011 and 2016, documented English-language use widened to praise tied to “lit”, Snapchat’s Streak marker and “dumpster fire”, slang for a hopeless mess.
Casual and emphatic; it fits comments and DMs better than formal or serious messages.
Under someone’s selfie, 🔥 may sound flirtatious; add words if you mean ordinary approval.

3Worth knowing
- “Fire” described high-quality weed in hip-hop slang by the early 1990s; in a cannabis-related message, 🔥 can carry that older reference.
- In 2016 the American Dialect Society, a US association of language scholars, named 🔥 its Emoji of the Year, glossing it as “lit” or exciting.
Questions people ask
2Why is there a number beside the fire emoji on Snapchat?
It’s Snapchat’s Streak counter, not a message from that person. As of 2026, Snapchat says the number is the Streak’s age in days; both people must exchange photo or video Snaps every day to keep it.
Why does the fire emoji look different on my phone?
Vendor artwork. Each company draws the same character its own way; Apple changed its flame in iOS 10.2, and Microsoft added red depth in Windows 10 Anniversary Update. The drawing changes, not the meaning.
