explosion frame-2

Explosion Frame 2

𜷾 is the middle picture in a three-frame explosion sequence from the Mattel Aquarius. That home computer used fixed character cells as game artwork instead of drawing arbitrary pixels. A single glyph is only a still; software has to switch frames to show motion.

What 𜷾 means

The middle still in a three-frame game explosion.

The Mattel Aquarius released in 1983 used character slot D1 for this symbol. D1 was one label in the computer’s fixed set of 256 glyphs. The Aquarius could not place pixels wherever a game artist wanted, so programmers built pictures from ready-made glyphs; one could act as a sprite, a small image that moves in a game.

A frame is one still image in an animation. Frame 1 and frame 3 are the bookends; read in order, the three glyphs suggest the burst unfolding.

Does 𜷾 animate by itself?
