right-pointing rocket booster

Right-pointing rocket booster

This is a tiny rocket booster facing right, preserved from a Sharp MZ home computer's European alternate display set. In its original role it was ready-made screen art; in an unfamiliar message, the drawing itself is the clearest guide.

What 𜲡 means

It shows a rocket's small booster engine.

In the 1980s, the European version of Sharp's MZ-700 home computer kept this rocket icon in a second set of pre-drawn screen pictures. Each picture occupied a text cell, so programs could assemble simple scenes from ready-made blocks; the Unicode mapping traces this one to display byte A1.

In that same 1980s MZ-700 setup, the alternate pictures weren't available as ordinary keypresses in the BASIC programming language. A program had to use POKE—a command that writes a value into screen memory—and set the alternate-character flag. As of 2026-09-28, Linux GNOME/GTK text fields accept Ctrl+Shift+U, then 1CCA1 and Enter; in Word for Windows, type 1CCA1 and press Alt+X.
