In work and startup chat, ๐ marks a launch: an app update going live, a new job, a project finally picking up speed. Think blast-off energy, not NASA news.
In crypto and stock threads it turns into price talk: this thing is about to skyrocket. That reading hardened into meme-stock shorthand around 2021. In 2023 a US judge, ruling in a lawsuit over NFT promotions, said rocket emojis posted with stock-chart and money-bag emojis could be read as signalling a profit.
What does it mean when someone sends you ๐?
They're hyping you up, or telling you it's live.
Got a lone ๐ after sharing good news? Take it as pure hype: confetti in text form, meaning "let's go".
As a Slack or GitHub reaction on your work, it reads as "shipped" or "great progress". A study of GitHub posts from 2012โ2017 found developers writing a standalone ๐ to announce a new project or feature.
Upbeat and low-risk in most chats. The exception is an unsolicited crypto pitch, where it reads as a sales pitch dressed up as excitement.
From a stranger hyping a coin, ๐ is promotion, not a promise. Check the claim before trusting the tip.
