Vulcan Salute

5/11

🖖 is the Vulcan salute, Spock's “live long and prosper” hand from Star Trek; fans shorten the phrase to LLAP. People send it as a warm hello, a friendly sign-off or a wink of sci-fi fandom. The surprise: Leonard Nimoy, who played Spock, borrowed the split-finger shape from a Jewish blessing he saw as a boy.

What 🖖 means

A friendly Star Trek hello or good wish. The sender is doing Spock's hand: hi, bye, or “may things go well for you.” It lands warmer than a plain wave and carries a small badge of fandom. Answering with 🖖 or a simple “you too” fits; nobody checks your Trekkie credentials.

Is the Vulcan salute Jewish?

Its shape comes from a Jewish blessing. In the Birkat Kohanim (Priestly Blessing), Kohanim, men from Jewish priestly families, raise both hands over the congregation with the fingers parted in pairs. The shape is associated with ש (shin), the Hebrew letter that begins Shaddai, a name of God. The blessing's words are ancient: silver amulets from Ketef Hinnom preserve an early version around the 6th century BCE. The paired-finger custom is far younger, and nobody can date exactly when it took hold.

Nimoy remembered peeking at the blessing in synagogue as a child. When the 1967 episode “Amok Time” needed a Vulcan greeting for Spock's meeting with T'Pau, a Vulcan elder, he proposed a one-handed version. In a chat, 🖖 points to Star Trek or simply a kind greeting; the ritual it came from is still practised in synagogues.

Warm, playful and a little nerdy; fine with friends and anyone who enjoys a sci-fi nod.

A 2019 Unicode proposal noted not everyone knows the Star Trek reference; add words when clarity matters.

Drift: In February 2015, after Nimoy's death, NASA documented astronaut Terry Virts giving the salute aboard the International Space Station as a tribute, adding a memorial reading.

Worth knowing

  • The characters behind 🖖 existed in Unicode 1 years before anyone was allowed to draw them in colour: Unicode 7.0 in 2014, emoji presentation in 2015.
  • 🖖 is a single code point, so it survives copying through almost anything — old databases, SMS gateways, printer drivers.

Questions people ask

2

Why can't I do the Vulcan salute with my hand?

Anatomy. Your middle and ring fingers share tendon connections, so parting them while keeping the pairs together takes practice. Pressing the fingers into place with your other hand first makes it easier.

What do you reply to live long and prosper?

“Peace and long life” is the familiar Star Trek answer, though characters sometimes say the two lines in reverse order. In a chat, returning 🖖 does the job.
