What ✋ means
Stop, me, or high five — the message around it decides. Picture a crossing guard's palm: on its own, the stop hand reads as “stop,” “enough” or “hold on.” As a reply to “Who wants to come?” it's a hand up in class — “I'm in.” Next to 🙌 or a win, it's one half of a high five.
The shape also had a game job. A 2009 Unicode background file comparing the emoji of Japanese mobile carriers lists ✋ as paper in rock-paper-scissors, with ✊ as rock and ✌️ as scissors.
What does it mean when someone sends you ✋?
Check what their message was answering. Under a plan or sign-up call, they're volunteering. Mid-argument or right after you vent, it means “I'm done with this topic” — a boundary, not necessarily anger. If nothing gives it away, ask rather than guess.
Sent bare in a heated thread, it can land as an order: a 2018 dictionary usage example glossed it as “stop bothering me.” Sending one yourself? A few words — “pause till tonight? ✋” — keep it soft.
✋ vs 🖐️: what's the difference?
✋ keeps its fingers together; 🖐️ spreads them apart. Both are palms facing out, so their meanings overlap, and at chat-bubble size they're easy to mix up. ✋ is the usual pick for stop and for volunteering; if a screenshot's tone seems off, zoom in on the fingers before judging.
Direct and a little blunt — clean for a pause or a quick “me,” wrong for softening bad news.
Bare, mid-fight, it can read as an order. Add a word to keep it soft.
