What ๐ means
Two hands thrown up in celebration: hooray, yes, praise. ๐ is the body's own exclamation mark. Most designs show two open hands reaching upward with small lines above them for motion, so the picture reads as arms flung into the air, the way a crowd reacts when the goal goes in.
In everyday messages it covers the whole family of happy noises: congratulations on a job, a pass, a baby; relief when something finally works ("the Wi-Fi is back ๐"); enthusiastic agreement with a suggestion ("pizza tonight? ๐"); and plain hype under a friend's photo or a favourite song. It often stands alone as the entire reply.
Its second life is religious. In many Christian communities, especially charismatic and Pentecostal churches and much of Black American church culture, people lift both hands while singing or praying, and ๐ became the natural emoji for that: praise hands, a hallelujah, a "praise God" after an answered prayer. In a church group chat or under a worship-team post, that is the reading, and the word "praise" is the emoji's unofficial name in those circles.
What does it mean when someone sends you ๐?
They are cheering you on; it is good news. Replying ๐ to your announcement means congratulations; replying to your plan means count me in; replying to your joke or your take means you nailed it. On its own it is a wordless "yes!", and in a work chat it is an enthusiastic, perfectly safe thumbs-up.
Where it misfires is tone, not content. ๐ answers only good things, so sent after bad news or a complaint it looks like you are celebrating. And it is not gratitude: if someone did you a favour, says thank you, while ๐ says "we won", a fine thing to add after the thanks but not a substitute for them.
Where does the raised hands gesture come from?
Prayer, long before emoji. Texts from ancient Israel describe lifting both hands to praise God or plead for help; Psalm 134 tells worshippers to lift up their hands in the sanctuary and bless the Lord. Early Christians prayed the same way, with arms raised and palms open, and the gesture never left: raised hands are still a familiar sight in charismatic and Pentecostal services during worship songs, which is why the emoji doubles as praise hands.
The emoji itself arrived with the first Japanese mobile emoji sets. Its Japanese name is ไธๆญณ (banzai), the celebration where everyone throws both arms up together while shouting the word, which literally means "ten thousand years". Early carrier versions were even animated, the hands shooting upward. The joy and the prayer were in the picture from the start; which one you see depends on who sent it.
Warm and low-risk, work chats included; as of 2026 ๐ has no stock sarcastic reading, unlike clapped between every word.
Sent after bad news or a complaint it reads as cheering, and it does not say thank you; that is .

5Worth knowing
- On Japanese keyboards the emoji is listed as ไธๆญณ, banzai: the cheer where a whole room throws its arms up at once, usually three times in a row.
- Early Christian art is full of figures praying with both hands raised, a posture art historians call the orans; the catacombs of Rome have several.
Questions people ask
4Is ๐ a high five?
Not officially. The character is two hands raised in celebration, not meeting another person's. Some people do read it as a double high five, a "high ten", and the cheerful meaning survives either way.
Does ๐ mean thank you?
Not on its own. Thank you is , palms together. ๐ says hooray; people add it after their thanks to show they are thrilled, but by itself it reads as celebration.
Is ๐ okay to use at work?
Yes. It is one of the safest reactions in a work chat: congratulations on a launch, approval of a plan, relief that a fix shipped. It carries no sarcasm and no hidden meaning.
Is ๐ a religious emoji?
It can be. Among Christians, especially in charismatic and Pentecostal churches, it means praise hands, a hallelujah. Outside those circles it is simply a cheer, and nobody will read faith into your "we won ๐".
