Instagram Symbols

Instagram symbols are the characters that work on Instagram once you know which field takes them: the username allows only letters, numbers, periods and underscores, while the Name field, the bio, captions, comments and Notes take any emoji or text symbol. Below are the ones people really use there, ready to copy: bio emoji like , the heart emoji in Instagram's own colours , the aesthetic set , dividers ︶︶ for bio layouts, frames 「」 for the Name field, and the nearest typeable versions of Instagram's own icons. Tap any symbol to copy it.

Instagram symbols for username, name and bio: what each field accepts

Instagram has two names and they follow different rules. The username is the handle after the @ and in your profile link; it can be up to 30 characters and may contain only letters, numbers, periods and underscores. Type a star, a heart or an emoji into it and Instagram answers that usernames can only use letters, numbers, underscores and periods, so the symbols people search for as "instagram username symbols" do not exist: a period and an underscore are the whole set, mira.k or kai_shoots. Instagram also treats the username as lowercase, which is why fancy capitals are impossible there too.

The Name field, shown in bold under your profile picture, is where symbols go. It takes up to 30 characters of any kind: ✿ mira ✿, ꒰ kai ꒱, Rey ☾, 𝓛𝓾𝓷𝓪. It can be changed only twice within 14 days, so test a frame in a note before you commit it. The bio takes 150 characters including spaces, emoji and line breaks, and the app keeps the line breaks, which is what makes the three-line bios with an emoji at the start of each line possible. Since 2023 a profile can hold up to five links in the link field, so the old 🔗 link below habit now points at a real list. Captions take 2,200 characters and up to 30 hashtags, comments take the same characters as captions, and Instagram Notes, the small bubbles above the inbox, take 60.

Two symbols on this page exist because of Instagram's own parsing. A plain # in a caption starts a hashtag and a plain @ starts a mention; the fullwidth # and @ look almost the same but link to nothing, so they let you write a # or @ in a bio as decoration without making a tag. The same is true of the keycap , which is an emoji rather than a hash sign.

What the symbols on Instagram mean (and the characters closest to them)

Instagram draws its interface icons itself and none of them can be copied, but they are what people mean by "instagram symbols explained". Under a post, left to right: the heart is like (one tap on the heart, or two taps on the photo), the speech bubble is comment, the paper plane sends the post to someone in a direct message or to your story, and the bookmark on the right saves it to a private collection. Since August 2025 there is a fifth: the two arrows in a loop, which is repost. Tapping it shares a public post or reel to your own profile, where it lives in a separate Reposts tab with the original creator still credited, and an Undo appears right after. A purple version of the same arrows on a reel means a friend reposted it. The nearest characters for these in a caption or a Note are , , or , and .

Elsewhere on the app: the three dots open the post's menu, the blue circle with a white tick is the verified badge, which since 2023 can also come from a Meta Verified subscription, a pin on a post in a grid means the owner pinned it to the top (up to three), a green ring around a story avatar means it is shared with Close Friends only, a coloured ring means a story you have not seen and a grey ring one you have, a clapperboard is a reel, the two overlapping squares on a grid thumbnail mark a carousel and the play triangle a video. In your Name or bio are just characters; they sit in the text, not next to the name where the real badge goes, so they do not read as verification and are better used honestly, for example ✅ orders open.

Instagram emoji meanings: hearts, sparkles and the comment section

The heart colours have settled meanings on Instagram. is the plain like and "love this"; , added in Unicode 15.0 in 2022, became the soft, girly, pink-aesthetic heart within months; is the minimalist and wedding heart, clean feeds and "pure"; is the dark-aesthetic heart, also used for grief and for "vibes" without saying much; is the fandom heart, especially for BTS, whose "borahae" turned purple into "I love you"; is friendship and sunshine, nature and money, loyalty and calm, warmth, cosy autumn feeds and melanin pride, sky and water, and the neutral, beige-feed heart. Stacked hearts say more: are affection growing, a crush, a gift, two people, and a heart used as an exclamation mark.

is the Instagram emoji: it means "aesthetic", "new", "magic" and, around a word, gentle sarcasm (✨ adulting ✨). , the heart hands added in 2021, is "love you" and "thank you" from a creator to followers and has taken over the bio sign-off from . is the nazar, posted under a flattering photo to ward off the evil eye, often with . is change and a soft-girl aesthetic, clean-girl and bubbles, coquette, party and disco, pride or a colourful feed. In the comments, and are the strongest praise, and love for a person, "I see this" or a sneak peek, is "this is so good I'm crying" far more often than sadness, is "I'm dead" laughing, is touched, is pleading, is melting from awkwardness or heat, and are cheering, applause and thanks. The emoji themselves are not Instagram's; the Social Media Emoji & Symbols and Gen Z Emoji Meanings collections go deeper into each.

Instagram bio symbols: lines, dividers, frames and the layouts people copy

An Instagram bio reads best as a short card, and the text symbols here are its furniture. A line on its own row separates the name part from the facts: , , or a double . A wave does the same more softly, ︶︶ or ﹏﹏﹏. A bar or a dot separates facts on one line: 📍 Lisbon ・ 🎓 FBAUL ・ 🎨 commissions open, with ・, •, or . Corners frame the whole bio when you have the characters to spare: ╭──────╮ on the first line and ╰──────╯ on the last, with starting the lines between. The owner of a bio with 150 characters cannot afford all of this at once; one divider and one kind of accent is the rule that the bios people screenshot follow.

The Name field takes frames and tails: ꒰ mira ꒱, 「kai」, 『Rey』, 【MIRA】, ୨ luna ୧, ꧁ Rey ꧂, a trailing 彡 or ツ, a or at the end. Searchers split these into "for girl" and "for boy" sets. The girl set is the soft one: , as in ⋆˚✿ mira ✿˚⋆. The boy set is bolder: 彡 ꧁ ꧂ 【 】 † ø, as in ꧁ Rey ꧂ or ★彡 KAI 彡★. Both are only habits; the same page serves either. The decorative letters that often go with them, 𝓵𝓾𝓷𝓪, 𝐑𝐄𝐘, ʟᴜɴᴀ, are in the Cursive Letters, Bold Letters and Small Caps collections; the soft set in Aesthetic Symbols and Cute & Kawaii Symbols; the gamer frames in Nickname Symbols; the full line families in Box Drawing Characters and Bullet Point & Divider Symbols.

Worth knowing before you paste: boxes, search and screen readers

Everything on this page is a standard Unicode character, so it survives copying into Instagram on iPhone, Android and the web. What differs is the font: the Egyptian hieroglyphs 𓆉 𓍢 𓂃, the Vai flower ꕤ and the Cham heart ꨄ depend on the phone having a font for that script, and a follower on an older Android may see a box or a blank where you see a flower. Hearts, stars, box lines, Japanese brackets and every emoji here are safe on any current phone. Instagram also shows your Name and bio in its own font, so weights and spacing can look a little different from the preview in your keyboard app.

Two honest limits. Instagram search matches the Name field and username by their actual characters, so 𝓶𝓲𝓻𝓪 is not found when someone types mira; keep the real spelling somewhere, in the username at least. And screen readers read decorative letters out one by one with their technical names ("mathematical bold capital M") or skip them, and read a line of as a row of "box drawings light quadruple dash horizontal". A bio that a blind follower can hear puts the symbols around the words, not instead of them, and keeps the divider to one line.

Setting your Name field
Wrap the name once or add one tail: mira , 「kai」, Rey , 彡 KAI 彡. Thirty characters, changeable twice in 14 days; the username itself takes no symbols.
Writing a three-line bio
One emoji opens each line: Lisbon ・ FBAUL, then commissions open, then shop & portfolio. A or ︶︶ divider on its own line between the name part and the facts, 150 characters in all.
Captioning a post
A short line, a sparkle at each end if you want it ( new work ), then a divider ・・・ before the hashtags so the caption and the tags read as two things. Up to 30 tags; a fullwidth # is shown but not linked.
Replying in the comments
Reactions are short and stacked: , , , under a flattering photo, for a teaser, for a joke. A single is what Instagram's own like button already says.
Story text, Notes and highlight titles
Highlight covers take only a few characters, so one symbol or word works: , , , 𓆉, 2025. Notes take 60 characters: listening to… . Story text keeps any symbol but shrinks it, so pick the heavier ones .
Asking for the follow, the link, the DM
link in bio, DM for collabs, turn on post notifications, repost if it helped, at the start of the link line. Pointing emoji work because the eye follows them to the real button.

Worth knowing

  • An Instagram username cannot hold a single symbol: only letters, numbers, periods and underscores, up to 30 characters. Every decorated name you see on Instagram is the Name field, which takes any 30 characters and can be changed only twice in 14 days.
  • The sparkles emoji and Instagram are the same age: entered Unicode 6.0 in October 2010, the month Instagram launched, and it went on to become the app's signature emoji.
  • The two-arrow repost button under posts is one of Instagram's newest icons, added in August 2025; before that, reposting a feed post needed a third-party app or a screenshot.
  • The favourite bio separator ・ is Japanese punctuation, the katakana middle dot, made to split the parts of foreign names written in katakana, which is why it sits centred with space on both sides.
  • The pink heart , light blue heart and grey heart only arrived in Unicode 15.0 in 2022, after years of Instagram users asking for a pink heart; the heart hands came a year earlier in Unicode 14.0.
