Female Sign

It marks female sex, womanhood, or support for women's rights. In everyday bios, captions, and labels, the woman symbol is a straightforward tag for a woman, a girl, or a female animal. Alongside slogans or rally hashtags, it shifts from a neutral label to a badge of feminist solidarity and empowerment.

Long before emoji, this circle over a cross was the astronomical sign for the planet Venus, the alchemical sign for copper, and—through Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus in the 1750s—biology's standard shorthand for female. Because it serves everything from science charts to protest banners, read a standalone sign from the words around it rather than treating it as a complete statement of how the sender identifies.

Why does ♀️ show up right next to another emoji?

It is usually half of a combined woman emoji come apart. Many emojis showing women—such as a woman shrugging, running, or working—are built behind the scenes by joining a base person emoji to ♀️ with an invisible connector called a zero-width joiner. When an older device, font, or app does not support that combined sequence, it displays the pieces side by side instead.

Because that invisible connector is required, simply typing ♀️ after a random emoji in a chat box will not fuse them into a female version. When someone does place it beside a fist or a flexed bicep on purpose, read the two as a deliberate pairing for women's strength or solidarity.
