It means pay attention: urgent, important, hard to ignore. Unicode named it after the beacon on a police car, but in a text it works like shouting in capitals — for warnings, big announcements, weather scares, spoilers, giveaways and gossip alike.

The picture traces back to Japanese mobile-phone emoji of the 2000s: the carrier KDDI, whose phones were sold under the au brand, had a patrol-car lamp as its own symbol. Unicode encoded it separately from the 🚓 police car, and the wider any-alarm meaning grew out of everyday use.

What does it mean when someone sends you 🚨?

Read it as “this matters right now.” How seriously depends on the sender: a friend opening with it has drama or a real heads-up, an official account is probably issuing a warning, and a caption bracketing a promo is hype, not danger.
