Emergency & Disaster Emoji

Emergency emoji are the characters people reach for when something has gone wrong: the siren , the SOS button , the warning sign , an ambulance or fire engine on the way, and the disasters themselves, from and to , and the new landslide . Below they are sorted the way an emergency unfolds: alert, call for help, responders, the hazard, the injury, the kit, the feelings, plus the plain-text signs , all ready to copy.

Emergency emoji meanings: siren, SOS and warning

is officially the police car light, but almost nobody uses it for a police car. It is the siren emoji: an alert, breaking news, "urgent", "attention everyone". It opens announcements, red-flag threads and emergency posts alike, which is why it stands at the top of this collection. is the SOS button, the most direct cry for help there is; in a chat it ranges from a real emergency to "help, I have an exam tomorrow". is the warning sign, the yellow triangle with the exclamation mark that road signs, labels and software use for caution; it marks a hazard, a content warning or something you need to read before you continue.

Around them sit the exclamation marks โ€ผ๏ธ for urgency, the bell for an alarm or a notification, and for a public announcement, and the red flag, which on a beach means "do not swim" and online means a warning sign about a person. The coloured dots follow the alert levels that weather services in Europe and elsewhere use: yellow for be aware, orange or amber for be prepared, red for take action. Pair one with the hazard and you have a readable alert: for a heavy-rain warning, for a tornado emergency.

SOS is not an abbreviation of anything. It was chosen as the international radio distress signal in 1906 because the Morse code pattern, three dots, three dashes, three dots, is easy to send and impossible to mistake; "save our souls" was invented afterwards to fit the letters. On iPhone and Android the emoji is also what people type when they mean the phone's own Emergency SOS feature.

First responders: ambulance, fire engine, rescue

The emergency vehicles arrived together in Unicode 6.0 in 2010, straight out of Japanese phone emoji: ambulance, fire engine, and police cars and helicopter. means a medical emergency or, with a wink, "send help"; is the fire brigade and anything to do with firefighters; covers air rescue, medevac and search flights. is the hospital and the emergency room at the end of the ride.

The people are firefighter, police officer, health worker, who stands in for paramedics and EMTs as well as doctors, and for rescue and road crews. Their gear has its own emoji: , the rescue worker's helmet with a cross on it, is the general first-responder sign, is the hi-vis safety vest, stands for protection and civil defence, and ring buoy (added in 2021) is the lifeguard and the sea-rescue emoji, often used for "help is here". fill in for air drops and boat rescues in a flood.

A note on the red cross: a red cross on a white background is a protected emblem under the Geneva Conventions, reserved for the Red Cross movement and military medical services. For "first aid" in a post, , or a plain cross such as is the better choice. The Star of Life on real ambulances has no emoji of its own; or does the job.

Natural disaster emoji: fire, storm, flood, earthquake, volcano

is the fire emoji in its literal sense here: a house fire, a wildfire , a fire warning. Its partner fire extinguisher came in 2018, and are the firefighter's axe and ladder. is an explosion or impact, are explosives, and read as smoke or a smoke warning. Storms have a whole family: tornado, cyclone, which in Japanese forecasts is the typhoon or hurricane symbol, for thunderstorms and lightning, for strong wind, for heavy rain, and for a flood, a storm surge or a tsunami. There is no tsunami emoji, so the wave does the work; Apple's design is drawn after Hokusai's Great Wave.

There is no earthquake emoji either. People use , the shaking face from 2022, often with and , and that is now what most earthquake posts look like. is an eruption, landslide is the newest member of the set (Emoji 17.0, 2025) and covers rockfalls and mudslides, with for falling rocks. derelict house is the picture of damage and ruins after any disaster. comet stands in for a meteor or asteroid.

Heat and cold are disasters too. make a heat-wave warning, is drought, and a blizzard or extreme cold, with for avalanche danger in the mountains. Weather in its everyday sense, forecasts and moods, has its own page in Weather Emoji; this collection keeps the dangerous end of it.

Hazard symbols: radioactive, biohazard, toxic

radioactive and biohazard are the two great hazard signs, both in Unicode since 1993. The radiation trefoil was drawn in 1946 at the University of California radiation laboratory in Berkeley; the biohazard symbol was designed in 1966 by Charles Baldwin at Dow Chemical, tested on people until it was found memorable and meaningless at the same time, so that it could be taught one meaning only. skull and crossbones is the poison and toxic sign, is a virus or outbreak and the mask that goes with it.

The road and site signs follow: no entry, prohibited, stop sign, for a barrier, a closed road or "under construction", and for water that is not safe to drink, a common notice after floods. The full set of prohibition signs lives in Warning & Prohibited Sign Emoji; here are the ones an emergency post needs.

Injuries come next. is the hurt face, a bandage and the usual first-aid emoji, blood or blood donation, the treatment and the medical symbol. Medical Emoji & Symbols has the complete clinic; this page stops at what an accident needs.

Emergency kit, evacuation and support emoji

Preparedness posts describe a go-bag with emoji: the bag, flashlight, candles, batteries and when they run low, a battery radio, water, food, a first-aid kit, rope, tools and shelter. For getting out there is for evacuate, for sharing a location or a meeting point, and for the call itself. Emergency numbers differ by country: 112 across the European Union and on any GSM phone, 911 in the US and Canada, 999 in the UK, 000 in Australia, 110 for police and 119 for fire and ambulance in Japan.

After the event come the feelings and the support: for fear and shock, for being dazed, for grief, then prayers, solidarity and relief work, and for a community that is hurting and healing, and with for a vigil. Condolence & RIP Emoji has more for mourning. Fundraising posts for disaster relief usually combine one hazard emoji with or and a link.

If you need a plain character instead of a colour picture, the text symbols at the bottom work in any font: caution sign, black skull and crossbones, lightning and thunderstorm, bells, bullhorn, telephone signs, first-aid crosses and a heavy exclamation ornament. also show as flat text symbols when you leave off the emoji variation selector, which many documents and older systems do by default.

Worth knowing

  • is officially the police car light, yet it is used for alerts, breaking news and "urgent" far more than for the police; the same beacon sits on ambulances and fire engines, which is why it became the all-purpose siren.
  • SOS stands for nothing: the signal was adopted in 1906 because ยท ยท ยท ยท ยท ยท is unmistakable in Morse code, and "save our souls" was made up afterwards to fit.
  • The biohazard symbol was designed in 1966 by Charles Baldwin at Dow Chemical and chosen because test audiences found it memorable but could not guess what it meant, so a single meaning could be attached to it; the radiation trefoil is twenty years older, drawn in 1946 at the Berkeley radiation laboratory.
  • There is no earthquake emoji and no tsunami emoji: people type the shaking face (2022) for the quake and the wave for the tsunami. Landslide did get its own character in Emoji 17.0 (2025).
  • was encoded in 2009 as helmet with white cross from Japanese broadcast symbols, where it marked rescue news; its emoji name became rescue worker's helmet.
