What 🪂 means
A parachute with a jumper under it, standing for sports done under a canopy. Most designs show a rounded or wing-shaped canopy, lines, and a small figure dangling below. There is no separate emoji for skydiving, paragliding or parasailing, so this one does the work for all three.
Those are different things, and the words around the emoji usually tell you which. Skydiving is jumping from an aircraft, falling freely for a while, then opening a parachute. Paragliding is taking off from a hillside under a wing-shaped canopy and gliding down slowly, with no free fall. Parasailing is being towed behind a boat under a parachute-like sail, a classic beach-holiday ride. Many first-timers do a tandem jump strapped to an instructor, and a photo of that with 🪂 is a typical job for the emoji.
Figuratively, a parachute is what saves you when you jump or fall, so 🪂 means a soft landing after a risky move, a leap of faith ("here goes nothing"), or bailing out of something. In business talk a "golden parachute" is a generous payout an executive receives on leaving, typically after a takeover, and 🪂 sometimes stands in for it.
What does it mean when someone sends 🪂?
Usually a real jump, or a joke about getting out of something. Next to a date, a place or a photo, take it literally: someone is going skydiving or paragliding, or just did and survived. After a complaint about work or a meeting, it is "I'm out" or "get me out of here," played as a stunt rather than a sulk. Before a bold move, it says they are jumping and hoping the chute opens.
The emoji is mostly cheerful, which is also its one trap. Sent in reply to someone's bad news, an escape joke can read as walking away from them. If you mean "you'll land softly, this will be fine," say so in words.
Light, adventurous and playful; fine in casual chat, odd in anything formal.
After someone's bad news, 🪂 can look like you are bailing on them. Add words.
