Camping emoji meanings: 🏕️ or ⛺, 🔥 and the night sky

There are two tent emoji and they are not the same. Tent is just the tent, a plain two-pole shape that works for a backyard sleepover, a festival or a quick "we're camping this weekend". Camping is the whole scene: a tent pitched in a landscape with a tree and, on most platforms, water or hills behind it. When a caption is about the trip rather than the object, is the one to reach for. (hut) covers a cabin or a shelter on the trail.

There is no separate campfire emoji. Fire does that job, and because it also means "this is amazing" in everyday texting, context matters: after a photo of the lake is a compliment, is a fire at the campsite. (wood) and (axe) are the logs and the chopping, is the flashlight for the walk to the toilet block. For the night itself use (Milky Way), the one emoji that really means a dark sky full of stars, with for a shooting star, or for the moon and if someone brought a telescope. say you slept, or tried to.

Hiking emoji: and the hiker who never existed

People search for a hiking emoji and come up empty, because there is no person-hiking emoji and there never has been. Emojipedia has traced the belief that one disappeared to a Mandela effect: what people remember is probably a sticker or the Hiking Boot, which arrived in 2018. The boot is the hiking emoji in practice. Pair it with Backpack for a day hike or a thru-hike, Compass and World Map for route-finding, for the trailhead or the summit in a caption, and (knot) and (adhesive bandage) for the rope and the blisters.

For the walking itself there is (person walking), (footprints), (person climbing) for scrambles and climbing days, and (person mountain biking) with and for trail riding. cover the kit list from cap to socks. These person emoji all take skin tones and most have man and woman versions, so and are a tap away on any phone keyboard.

Mountains, national parks, forest and weather

(snow-capped mountain) is the high peak; (mountain) is a green, lower one, better for hill walking. is specifically Mount Fuji, a volcano, the desert, and National Park is the emoji that American park accounts and visitors use for Yosemite, Zion, Yellowstone and the rest. is sunrise over mountains and makes a good opener for a summit post, sunrise over water for a lakeside camp, and for the rainbow after the rain and the fog that hid the view.

Forest emoji are (evergreen) for pines and firs and (deciduous) for everything else, with for the forest floor and for the rock you sat on. The weather row reads like a trail report: for sun, cloud, rain, storms and wind, for the temperature and how it felt, when it snowed, and when the snow was the point. Water has its own set: for the lake and the stream, for hot springs, (canoe), (rowing), (fishing) and for the swim.

Camp food, wildlife and getting there

There is no marshmallow emoji and no s'mores emoji. The usual stand-in is Dango, three soft balls on a skewer, which looks exactly like marshmallows on a stick; add and for the chocolate and the graham cracker. The camp kitchen is for the morning coffee, and for the pan and the pot, for canned food, for the fire and for trail lunch, for the evening.

Wildlife emoji do double duty as the sighting and the warning. are the big animals, the small ones that raid a campsite at night, the birds, frogs, snakes and fish of the lake, and the bugs, with the honest emoji of most camping trips. is the shorthand for bear country. For the drive there is (minibus, the van-life emoji), pickup, SUV, and ; for the way up, mountain railway, and cable cars, and if you came down the fast way. are the trailhead signs: take care, don't litter, bin it, drinking water.

  • Tent is older than most emoji: U26FA was added to Unicode in 2009, before the big 2010 emoji release. Camping arrived five years later in Unicode 7.0.
