What 🍄 means
Mushrooms, with the surrounding message choosing the flavour. In a recipe it is an ingredient; in a forest or cottagecore post it is woodland mood; in Super Mario talk it is the Super Mushroom, the power-up that has made Mario grow since Super Mario Bros. in 1985. Where the talk is about psychedelics, 🍄 can stand in for “shrooms,” slang for psilocybin mushrooms.
The picture is not a supermarket button mushroom. Its red cap with white flecks evokes the fly agaric (Amanita muscaria), the toadstool illustrators have set beneath fairies and gnomes since the 19th century; “toadstool” is the old English word for a mushroom, often one you wouldn't eat. The real fly agaric is poisonous and can cause hallucinations, but through different compounds from the psilocybin mushrooms most people mean by “magic mushrooms.” Mario's Super Mushroom wears a similar spotted cap, and Alice in Wonderland, where nibbling a mushroom changes Alice's size, keeps mushrooms firmly in fantasy territory.
Why did someone send me 🍄?
A lone 🍄 doesn't say which mushroom they mean. Read the conversation first. Festival plans or the word “magic” are hints, not proof: games and fairy tales have magic too, and plenty of people simply like mushrooms.
If you're the sender and it's about food, spell it out (“mushrooms for dinner”) or use 🍄🟫, the brown mushroom added for exactly that. The red toadstool can suggest poison, or a nod to shrooms, when you meant something for the pan.
Playful in fantasy chat, ordinary in a recipe; the mushroom itself doesn't make a message drug-related.
The red toadstool can suggest poison or shrooms even when you mean food.

3Worth knowing
- Fly agaric is named after an old household use: pieces of the cap, sometimes soaked in milk, were set out to catch flies.
- Colour is no safety guide: some of the deadliest mushrooms are plain white or pale, and the red spotted cap is simply the most recognisable poisonous one.
Questions people ask
2Why is the mushroom emoji red when the mushrooms I eat are brown?
Because it evokes the storybook fly agaric, not a button mushroom. The brown mushroom 🍄🟫 was added later for food talk.
Is the mushroom emoji a magic mushroom?
Not exactly. The picture evokes the fly agaric, which is poisonous and acts differently from the psilocybin mushrooms called magic mushrooms. In drug talk, though, 🍄 often stands in for shrooms.
