Fairy

A generic winged fantasy creature: magic, mischief, wonder. Unicode's 2016 proposal pictured a small humanlike figure with insect wings, deliberately not any particular storybook character. Plain 🧚 is gender-neutral; adding the male or female sign makes the man or woman fairy.

The English word is attested by the 14th century, but the tiny butterfly-winged look is newer. Fairies in older British and Irish folklore varied in size, from child-sized to human-like, were usually wingless, and in Irish belief were dangerous to offend. Victorian children's books and illustrators helped popularise the dainty winged figure the emoji shows.

What does it mean when someone sends you a fairy emoji?

Usually cute and whimsical, not flirty. Alone it adds a sprinkle of magic, much like ✨. Beside mushrooms or moons in a bio it points to fairycore, the dreamy nature-and-fantasy aesthetic that spread on TikTok and Tumblr around 2021. If it is aimed at a man, check the tone: the word doubles as old, offensive slang for a gay man.
