๐Ÿšถ

person walking

Pick skin tone, gender and facing direction in the family tuner; ๐Ÿšถ itself is the neutral default. The walking emoji, or pedestrian emoji, shows someone on foot, and sent alone in a chat it usually means โ€œon my way.โ€ Turning the figure to face right keeps the same action.

What ๐Ÿšถ means

Usually a status update: I'm on foot, heading over. After โ€œwhere are you?โ€ a lone ๐Ÿšถ means the sender is walking now, not signalling a mood. Next to a step count or a commute complaint it just logs the walk. It never says where they're going; the surrounding words do that.

Where did the walking emoji come from?

From Japanese phone pictographs, not from traffic lights. Japanese carriers put emoji on phones in the late 1990s: J-Phone (later SoftBank) in 1997, then NTT DoCoMo's influential set in 1999. A 2007 Unicode proposal set out to encode the carriers' pictographs so they survived between networks, and Unicode's mapping ties ๐Ÿšถ to matching walker symbols from KDDI and SoftBank.

Pedestrian signals are a parallel history. The U.S. Federal Highway Administration's earliest reference is a 1938 New York WALK/WAIT announcement, followed by WALK/DON'T WALK signals in Washington, D.C., in 1939. East Berlin's Ampelmรคnnchen, the little figure on its crossing lights, was proposed in 1961, installed in 1969, and saved by a 1997 campaign.

Low-stakes and literal โ€” it reads as a status update, not an emotion, so it's safe in almost any chat.

Sent as your only reply in a tense conversation, it can look like you're walking away from the topic.

Questions people ask

2

Is it rude to just send ๐Ÿšถ?

No. It reads as neutral logistics; the risk is using it as your only reply mid-argument, where it can look like you're checking out instead of answering.

What's the difference between ๐Ÿšถ, , and ?

Only who's shown walking. ๐Ÿšถ leaves gender unspecified; the other two show a man or a woman, and the walk means the same thing.
