Angel emoji meaning: ๐Ÿ˜‡ halo, ๐Ÿ‘ผ baby angel and ๐Ÿชฝ wing

Smiling face with halo is the angel most people actually send. Its plain meaning is innocent, well-behaved, blessed: I was good today . Far more often it is the opposite, a halo put on after something cheeky, so who, me? reads as playful guilt. From a girl or a guy in a flirty chat it usually means I'm being goodโ€ฆ for now, and in a reply to a compliment it means you're too kind. It also appears in memorial posts, where the halo stands for someone who has passed.

Baby angel is the cherub: a round baby face with a halo and small wings on most platforms, a whole winged baby on some. It is the angel for babies and children (christenings, a newborn, a sleeping toddler), for you're an angel when someone helps you, and for grief, where our little angel and angel baby are the common words for a child who has died. Read the room before using it as a joke.

Wing is a single white feathered wing, used for angel wings, fairy wings, flight and freedom, and for the angelcore look in bios. There is only one wing in Unicode and it is not mirrored, so the โ€œangel wings emoji left and rightโ€ people search for does not exist: type it twice, , and the pair reads as wings around a heart. Dove is peace and, in Christian art, the Holy Spirit; feather is the soft, single-feather version of the same idea, often shared as a sign that a lost loved one is near. Fairy is the winged cousin that gets borrowed for fairycore and angelcore alike.

Angel emoji combos: halo and horns, fallen angels and angelcore bios

The oldest combo is the pair : angel on one shoulder, devil on the other, two-faced, which one are you today? Add for the angry devil. A fallen angel is wings with something dark around them, or , and it has become its own aesthetic, as common in Discord names as the pure white version. For the Devil & Demon Emoji collection, go there; this page keeps to the heavenly side.

Angelcore bios are built from white and pale blue: white heart, light blue heart, clouds, bubbles, and white flowers, sparkles and doves, around or . Clouds and light make the โ€œheavenโ€ half of a combo: or . The magic wand and add a little magic without turning it into a witch post.

For a blessing or a thank-you, or says you're an angel. For sympathy, and are the gentle ones; folded hands on its own is read as praying in most countries. Angel numbers (111, 222, 444 and the rest) go in plain digits next to or in captions, since there is no special character for them.

Angel text symbols: O:-), wings in text and sparkle clusters

Before there were emoji, the angel was typed: O:-) or O:), a smiley with a halo, and MSN Messenger turned (A) into a little angel icon. Modern text angels use letters and marks that happen to look like wings. สš and ษž are two letters from the phonetic alphabet that curl like small wings, so สšษž is the standard text angel heart. ๐“†ฉ and ๐“†ช are a pair of Egyptian hieroglyphs (shells, originally) that frame a heart as ๐“†ฉ๐“†ช, and the soft brackets from the Yi script hold a name the same way: angel .

The sparkle around an angel name is a cluster of thin text stars: with (a maths symbol that reads as a twinkle) and the tiny and marks, as in . For a halo in text, people put a ring above a kaomoji face. is the empty text heart that matches the pure, white feel better than ; and are the text sun and moon for a celestial line like .

All of these are ordinary Unicode characters, so they work in usernames, game tags and bios where colour emoji are blocked. Rare ones (the hieroglyphs, the Yi brackets) need a font that has them; test on the phone you care about before you commit a username to them.

Heaven's props: clouds, doves, harps and the halo

Angels in emoji borrow their props from centuries of painting. The halo, properly a nimbus, marked saints and angels in Christian art from the 4th century on, and is just that ring on a smiley. The chubby baby angel is really a putto, a Renaissance invention; the cherubim of the Bible are nothing like it (Ezekiel describes four-faced winged guardians), and the seraphim of Isaiah have six wings. The dove comes from the baptism of Jesus, where the Spirit descends like a dove, and from Noah's dove with its olive branch.

Clouds ( ) and dawn light ( ) are heaven in one emoji, which is why they sit under almost every angel combo. The harp and the trumpet are the angel instruments: harps for the heavenly choir of old paintings and hymns, trumpets for the archangel announcing the end of the world. and stand in for the choir itself. The bell comes from It's a Wonderful Life: every time a bell rings, an angel gets its wings.

The crosses belong here because angel bios so often carry one; and are the West and East Syriac crosses, plain enough to pass as decoration. candle and folded hands are the prayer side, covered in full in the Prayer & Blessing Emoji collection.

Where the angel emoji came from

Baby angel and smiling face with halo both arrived with Unicode 6.0 in 2010, in the first big batch of emoji taken from Japanese phones. dove followed in Unicode 7.0 (2014), fairy in 10.0 (2017), white heart in 12.0 (2019) and feather in 13.0 (2020). The wing that people had been asking for since the beginning was only added in Unicode 15.0 (September 2022) and reached phones during 2023; light blue heart came in the same release. The harp is the newest piece, from Unicode 16.0 (2024), so on an older phone it still shows as a blank box.

Designs differ by platform: Apple's has a yellow face and a floating halo, while is a head with wings on some keyboards and a full cherub on others. Copy from this page and the characters are the same everywhere; only the drawing changes with the receiver's device.

Worth knowing

  • The chubby baby angel is a putto, a Renaissance painters' invention. Biblical cherubim are four-faced winged guardians in Ezekiel, and Isaiah's seraphim have six wings each.
  • The halo has a name, nimbus, and in early medieval and Byzantine art a living person could be painted with a square one, the round halo being reserved for the dead and the holy.
  • Wing reached Unicode only in 2022, twelve years after and , and it comes as a single wing: there is no mirrored left-and-right pair, so people simply type it twice.
  • The typed angel O:-) is older than any emoji; MSN Messenger showed a small angel for (A), and Skype still does for (angel).
  • The line โ€œevery time a bell rings, an angel gets his wingsโ€ is from the 1946 film It's a Wonderful Life, which is why reads as a Christmas angel.
