Sparkles

It adds shine: beauty, excitement, newness or a small win. A trailing ✨ can mark a new haircut, a spotless kitchen, a finished project or a happy reaction — a quieter celebration than 🎉.

The look comes from Japanese manga and anime (comics and animation), where sparkles surround beautiful people, shiny objects, magical transformations and joyful moments. The emoji was in Japanese mobile-carrier sets by 1999, and a 2008 proposal to bring those Japanese emoji into Unicode listed it as “sparkling new.”

Emoji designer Shigetaka Kurita has described Japanese sentence-final use as simply positive. English-language posts, especially in the US, added a second habit: bookending words for emphasis, performance or irony.

Why do people put ✨ around a word?

Bookending adds emphasis, performance or an ironic wink. In “I am ✨thriving✨,” the glitter makes the word sound staged, like a dramatic voice — often self-mockery. “In my ✨professional opinion✨” pokes fun at the professionalism.

Decode by placement, then content. One trailing sparkle usually warms the sentence. Brackets around the sender’s own life are usually playful; brackets around your exact words lean teasing.
