Nail Polish

💅 means someone is unbothered: the sassy nails emoji pairs a fresh manicure with a cool "not my problem" or "told you so." In chats it caps a brag or a bit of shade. Under a real nail photo, or next to lipstick, it goes back to plain beauty talk.

What 💅 means

It's the unbothered flick: I'm cute, I'm done here. The nail-painting hand is posture, not nail care: someone too busy admiring their manicure to care about your nonsense. After a win it's a flex; after someone else's drama it's amused distance, not comfort. Aimed at a person, it's shade — a sly, indirect put-down.

It started literal. A 2007 Unicode proposal set out to merge the emoji of Japan's phone carriers DoCoMo, KDDI and SoftBank, each with its own codes, into one shared set. A 2008 mapping filed 💅 under personal care, with DoCoMo's icon labelled 'manicure' in Japanese. By 2014, pop-culture writing already described its second life as confidence, indifference and shade.

The words typed beside it have a documented home. 'Shade' — a cool, indirect put-down — comes from Black and Latino LGBTQ ballroom culture, competitions where throwing the best shade could win the room. Ballroom also popularized 'slay' as praise for a flawless look, though the word is older slang.

What does it mean when someone sends you 💅?

They're floating above it, not attacking you. A solo 💅 after your vent means they find it entertaining, not urgent. After their own comeback it's punctuation: case closed. Read it as shade only if the words point at you. In a small 2017 tweet study, pairing it with lipstick 💄 usually signalled literal makeup talk instead.

Sassy and self-assured; usually playful, rarely a real insult.

Sent mid-argument, it can read as mocking — skip it if you want to calm things down.

Worth knowing

  • Android 6.0.1 swapped its old nail-polish bottle picture for a hand being painted, so older Android phones showed an object rather than a gesture.

Questions people ask

2

Is 💅 rude?

Not usually. It lands as playful shade; the words around it decide how sharp it feels.

What's the difference between 💅 and 💁?

Different gesture. 💁 is a person tipping their hand, sassy and chatty; 💅 is a nail check that shrugs you off.
